Propagation-invariant space-time caustics of light

چکیده

Caustics are responsible for a wide range of natural phenomena, from rainbows and mirages to sparkling seas. Here, we present caustics in space-time wavepackets, class pulsed beams featuring strong coupling between spatial temporal frequencies. Space-time wavepackets have attracted much attention with their propagation-invariant intensity profiles that travel at tunable superluminal subluminal group velocities. These profiles, however, been largely restricted an X-shape or similar pattern. We show combine the propagation invariance flexible design caustics, allowing customizable patterns wavepackets. Our method directly provides phase distribution needed realize user-designed caustic can feature broad intriguing optical including backward traveling formed purely forward propagating waves, nondiffracting evolve time. findings should open doors even wider structured light spatiotemporal coupling.

Laws of Light Propagation in Galilean Space-Time*

None of the theories proposed to date for the propagation of light in Galilean space-time has possessed the requisite experimental and theoretical coherence to merit consideration as an alternative to special relativity. The reason for this failure is that the notion of a propagating light wave, as accepted prior to and since Einstein’s special relativity theory, has no validity in Galilean spa...

Real-Time Volumetric Caustics with Projected Light Beams

We present a method for the visualization of volumetric caustics in single-scattering participating media. The caustics beams are generated from a projected grid in light’s image space, making the solution independent from the geometric complexity of generators. The caustic volumes are extruded in the geometry shader and accumulated into the final volumetric effect.

Changes in the spectrum of light arising on propagation through a linear time-invariant system

It has been demonstrated in the last few years, both theoretically [ 1-5 ] and experimentally [ 6-10 ] that, in general, the spectrum of light generated by a partially coherent source changes on propagation, even in free space. Spectral changes also arise when a polychromatic light passes through a dispersive optical element, such as a prism or a diffraction grating or is diffracted at an apert...

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation of Light Propagation in 2D Periodic and Quasi-Periodic Photonic Structures

Ultra-short pulse is a promising technology for achieving ultra-high data rate transmission which is required to follow the increased demand of data transport over an optical communication system. Therefore, the propagation of such type of pulses and the effects that it may suffer during its transmission through an optical waveguide has received a great deal of attention in the recent years. We...

Evidence of X-Shaped Propagation-Invariant Localized Light Waves

Ten years ago Durnin, Miceli, and Eberly [1] reported on the startling first experimental investigation of the socalled nondiffracting Bessel beam, which was formed from a cw laser light by an annular slit and a collimating lens. The beam was found to maintain its sharply peaked radial profile over large distances outclassing the Rayleigh range. During the decade monochromatic Bessel beams have...
